The path you choose early on is important, as you’ll quickly become seasoned (i.e. pigeonholed) into that path. So for instance, imagine your first job out of undergrad is in retail development; and you spend 3 or 4 years in that area. Transitioning to another area of real estate, such as multifamily acquisitions thereafter, becomes much more difficult without having to take a step back in your career progression.

Spencer wrote a lengthy post on the subject here that I’m sure you’ll find valuable:

In terms of the next steps in your training, proficiently modeling real estate in Excel would be a priority, as all firms use Excel in some fashion to model real estate.

Depending on the firm, ARGUS training may or may not be helpful as well. My suggestion would be to review the requirements for the jobs you’re targeting and if ARGUS is a common requirement, then spend some time familiarizing yourself with ARGUS.

But even then, plan to allocate in terms of learning time 10 hours in Excel for every 1 in ARGUS.

In terms of your question. The right decision is entirely dependent on the person, their previous experience in real estate, where they’d like to work full-time, and in what area of real estate they’re interested in.

Generally speaking, the MBA is a generalist degree, which provides optionality in the event you later decide real estate isn’t the right fit. The MSRE in contrast offers focus, especially as it relates to network and curriculum.

Spencer, Michael, and Sam have released an audio series episode discussing this exact question. Find it here: https://www.adventuresincre.com/audioseries-s2spe7/
